The Day In Recruiting - Guide To Recruiting Sites

Posted by: Geoff Peterson

Check out The Day In Recruting. Per the website: “A one-page guide to all the buzz in the recruitment industry: Blogs, Jobs, Podcast and News.” The site was started by Jim Stroud. Check out his blog, which is one of my personal favorites for recruiters and sourcers.

This site is very useful because you can see a ton of sites that are all specific to recruiting and sourcing. I suggest checking each one out, and subscribe to a Google Reader as well. With this tool, you won’t have to check the sites individually, but rather will get all the posts to each site delivered to your reader each day.

ResumeZapper - 100’s of Free Resumes/Week

If you are not already signed up for ResumeZapper - do it now! They are a resume distributor for job seekers. Per their website: “If you are a 3rd party recruiter, headhunter, or search firm, now you can receive TARGETED resumes FREE!”

I signed up a few months ago, and receive close to a hundred free resumes every day and it doesn’t cost anything. You can set-up certain criteria, such as which industries, key words or geographic locations you wish to receive, then watch as the resumes roll into your email inbox from there. I recommend creating a rule in outlook or your email service (Outlook example below) to filter the resumes to an electronic folder and get them out of the way of normal daily email. When you want to search across them, simply use your desktop search engine, and search across them for what you are looking for.

Click the option in Outlook titled “Create Rule”. This is located in the top tool bar.

Click on one of the first resumes you receive by email from ResumeZapper. Check the box “From ResumeZapper” at the top, and the box “Move e-mail to folder” at the bottom and create a new folder in Outlook to put the resumes in.

X1 - Search Across Your Resumes

Before you begin recruiting or sourcing for your next position, take a look and see what candidates you already have in your “pipeline”. X1 is a great tool that will search your computer for all resumes you have.

This tool will search your computer desktop, electronic folders, and entire hard drive and pull up the results for you based on the criteria you ask it to search. There are other tools out there in the desktop search tool space such as Copernic, Windows Desktop Search and Google Desktop Search, but X1 is my favorite. It’s a matter of preference and amount you are willing to spend (or amount your company will pay for).

To show an example of X1 in use, I want to find resumes I have of candidates who are skilled in Java and who are local to Washington, D.C. I use the search box and put in as many descriptive key words around Java and related technologies such as J2EE and JSP for instance. I include the words developer, programmer and others for more detail. I also include 202, 703 and 301 area codes to find resumes with telephone numbers that match. You can see in the screen shot below the exact search string I used and some of the results. X1 allows for boolean search strings (AND, OR and NOT) so there are tons of possibilities when you use it.

I also included the search string here as well:

Welcome to StaffBytes - we are officially up and running. This site is exclusively dedicated to the staffing world, specifically created for recruiters, sourcers, researchers and  all other professionals who ”search” for people as part of their job description, hobby or passion. The goal of StaffBytes is to share expert tips, techniques, strategies and knowledge for recruiting and sourcing.

I am seeking all others who see value in StaffBytes, and want to contribute to this site, whether it be daily, weekly, monthly or on a one-time occasion. I am looking for other people who want to share their recruiting and sourcing knowledge, show tips, make suggestions, express viewpoints, experiences or simply have a new website to share. The “Recruit Chute” located in the upper right hand corner of the site is put into place for just this reason.

Subscribe today and get a daily dose of “Bytes” solely focused on recruiting and sourcing. Please feel free to contact with any suggestions or to discuss further involvement with this site.
